Spirulina, lemon, and ginger; these ingredients are ideal for a fantastic cleanser to clean out your gut, especially during heavy-eating holiday business! However, these ingredients are a staple in our smoothie concoctions on a regular basis. Fun Fact: Spirulina is so revered for it's health benefits, its been used in massive health initiatives for malnourished populations around the world, including The Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-Algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM). For all you protein lovers, it's surprisingly high in beneficial plant proteins; up to 70% of its dry mass is protein! It is especially known for its incredible ability to regulate blood cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and even regulate blood sugar. (Do you see a theme here? Plants just tend to natural stabilize us well) Don't get caught up in the habit of thinking you should cleanse, eat badly, and then starve yourself and "cleanse" all over again. Try to make smoothies part of your every day. Every single morning, make it a goal to have some greens and fresh fruit in the morning. And if you can, add something special, like ginger or spirulina. Your body will thank you!
Fun fact: Ginger has a powerful polyphenol in it (FYI: A polyphenols are micronutrients that plants produce to protect themselves against UV damage or pathogens---and they have powerful protective effects on us as well), called Gingerol. Ginger really is a golden child, and raw ginger (although powdered ginger spice is great, too) has been used for its aromatic, flavorful, and medicinal properties for hundreds of years. Some studies of recent have shown ginger to be more powerful in relieving symptoms of nausea than leading pharmaceuticals. Of course that's not all, ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and even has beneficial effects in stabilizing blood glucose and cholesterol levels. This ingredient can be an acquired taste for some, but personally for me, when mixed with citrus fruit flavors such as in this smoothie, it is delicious and refreshing.
